About John Pascoe - Wine Guy
“In vino veritas, say the wise men: Truth is in wine. Before the days of Noah, the men, having nothing but water to drink, could not discover truth. Thus they went astray, became abominably wicked, and were exterminated by water, which they loved to drink.” Benjamin Franklin
Being first introduced to wine back in the sixties when I often watched my father partaking of and enjoying a BV (Beaulieu Vineyards) “Chablis,” it is no wonder to me that my meandering path has brought me to the world of wine. In the early seventies, I migrated out of the Pacific Northwest rain to the sun, and fog, of San Rafael, California. I began exploring Napa and it was here that the “wine guy” was born. Having now lived in Sonoma County for the past 26 years with my wife and two daughters, I have found many opportunities to nurture my understanding of fine wine. With wineries and vineyards surrounding us and Napa a mere twenty minute drive over the hills, I have had abundant resources and inspiration for developing my wine knowledge. Over the years I have refined my own palate in terms of defining what I appreciate and look for in wine. Using my own taste and sense, combined with the views and preferences of others, I offer a unique perspective on wine and its ever varying details.
Eight years ago, when my creative endeavors were not generating much income, I took a job with a fine wine brokerage firm in Santa Rosa and began recommending/selling wine to individuals who enjoy the journey as much as I do. I have found that talented winemakers, in conjunction with talented vineyard managers can make great wines in a good year provided the right clones/varietals are planted in the right soils and micro-climates. Identifying the players and the right components in a particular release is an invigorating challenge and one that I approach with great enthusiasm.
